| Gergely Ittzés on his flute compositions |
"I had been dealing with the most modern technique of flute playing during my early studies. I used to frequently practice the special blowing-in techniques and polyphonic sounds taken from here or there. I loved these sonic possibilities so much that I wanted to show them to people on the stage. To realise this, one needs compositions. At the time, there were not very many available, or I did not have the opportunity to obtain them. My experience was that building these sounds into the musical language of a composition was very difficult for someone who didn't have serious individual experiences with the flute. Since the age of 18 or 20 I was improvising a lot on my flute. I often got compositional ideas, so I decided to become my own composer, and thus my first flute works were born. These were for the most part intentionally and assumedly simple works (Just a Tube, Chuang Tse's Dream, Mr. Dick Is Thinking In Terms Of A Blues-Pattern) These works are still close to me, like the later ones which are more complicated in structure (Projections, Flute-variations, Circles, Sound Poems etc.)."
"My activity as a composer takes its origin from my performer being, and are closely connected to the performance of the flute. Most of my works were composed for one or several flutes, and I anticipate that this trend will remain into the future. (The only exceptions are my pieces composed for the Talizmán group, the style of which could be described as ethno-jazz-rock.) For me, the most attractive new effects are the fine, soft, clear double-stops (the meditation music pi transcendent and Chuang Tse's Dream are costructed excludingly by these ones), however, I show a preference for humorous elements as well (Mr. Dick., L'effet Doppler or the Disgusting Slurping which is a duet cheasing the badly used circular breathing)."
